Social Worker Job Description – Swansea SA1

Carer Agency is partnering with leading local authorities, NHS teams, and third-sector organisations in Swansea to recruit Social Workers for critical frontline roles. These positions are at the heart of community support, safeguarding vulnerable children, adults, and families across the SA1 postcode and surrounding areas.

As a registered Social Worker with Carer Agency, you will be deployed to where your skills are needed most, offering stability and variety. Whether you're seeking an immediate temporary assignment or a long-term permanent position, we provide the gateway to rewarding work with competitive remuneration and dedicated agency support. Our deep understanding of the Swansea social care landscape, similar to our expertise in Healthcare Workforce Solutions, ensures you are matched with organisations that align with your professional values and career goals.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

In this vital role, you will manage a complex caseload with professionalism and empathy. Your core duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting holistic assessments of need and risk for children, adults, and families, creating and implementing effective support and protection plans.
  • Managing statutory caseloads in line with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, ensuring all interventions are legally compliant and ethically sound.
  • Working collaboratively with multi-agency partners including health professionals, schools, police, and housing officers to deliver coordinated care.
  • Preparing detailed reports and presenting evidence in court, case conferences, and strategy meetings to advocate for service users.
  • Providing crisis intervention and safeguarding responses to protect vulnerable individuals from harm, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Mentoring and supporting students and less experienced colleagues, contributing to a positive learning culture within teams.

Essential Requirements & Qualifications

To be successful in this Social Worker role, you must meet the following professional criteria:

  • A recognised Social Work degree (BA or MA) and current registration with Social Care Wales (SCW).
  • Substantial post-qualifying experience (PQE) in a statutory UK setting, ideally within child protection, adult safeguarding, or mental health teams.
  • In-depth working knowledge of relevant UK legislation (e.g., Care Act 2014, Children Act 1989/2004, Mental Capacity Act 2005) and Wales-specific frameworks.
  • A clean, enhanced DBS certificate issued within the last 12 months or registered on the Update Service.
  • Exceptional communication, assessment, and report-writing skills, with resilience to manage high-pressure situations.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle is highly desirable for community-based roles.

Common placements include: Local Authority Children's Services (Frontline, Child Protection, Looked After Children), Adult Social Care Teams (Mental Health, Physical Disability, Older People), NHS Hospital Discharge Teams, Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs), and specialist charities supporting homelessness, domestic abuse, or substance misuse. We match your skills and preferences to the most suitable setting.

For candidates with all compliance documents ready (valid SCW registration, DBS, references), the process can be very fast. We have clients with urgent needs who can interview within 48 hours and offer an immediate start. Typically, from application to first shift can take between 3 to 10 working days, depending on the specific client's onboarding speed. Our team prioritises fast-tracking for urgent vacancies.

Yes, absolutely. We believe in investing in your professional development. Registered candidates get free access to an online training portal with courses on Safeguarding, GDPR, Mental Capacity Act, and more. Furthermore, we can often facilitate access to client-specific training required for the role. We also provide regular updates on SCW re-registration requirements and can advise on portfolio development for those pursuing Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) or Best Interests Assessor (BIA) status.

A temporary (or locum) contract is for a fixed period, such as 3-6 months to cover maternity leave or a vacancy. You are employed by Carer Agency for that duration. A temp-to-perm (or contract-to-perm) role begins as a temporary assignment with a clear view from the client to offer you a permanent contract after a successful trial period, typically 12-26 weeks. This is an excellent way for both you and the employer to ensure it's a good fit before committing permanently. We will always be transparent about the potential for permanency from the outset.

Flexibility is one of the key advantages of agency work. We have roles to suit various needs: full-time (37 hours), part-time (e.g., 2-3 days a week), and even block bookings for specific projects. You can discuss your availability with your consultant, and we will only put you forward for roles that match your preferred hours. This level of flexibility is similar to what we offer in other sectors, such as for Temporary Warehouse Staff or Sales Representatives.
