Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

• Safe Collection & Handling: Operate as part of a crew to collect domestic and commercial refuse from designated routes within Birmingham B26, following all manual handling procedures.
• Vehicle Operation Support: Assist the driver with the safe operation of the refuse collection vehicle (RCV), including the use of lifting mechanisms and compaction systems.
• Route Completion: Work efficiently to complete daily collection rounds, ensuring all scheduled properties are serviced and bins are returned correctly.
• Public Interaction: Provide a courteous and professional service to residents and businesses, addressing basic queries and reporting any issues to the crew leader.
• Site Hygiene & Safety: Maintain a clean and safe working environment around the vehicle and collection points, picking up any spillages and securing waste properly.
• Equipment Checks: Perform basic pre-start checks on personal protective equipment (PPE) and report any vehicle or equipment defects immediately.
• Recycling Segregation: Where required, ensure different waste streams (general waste, recycling, garden waste) are handled and collected appropriately.

• Physical Fitness & Stamina: The role is physically demanding, requiring lifting, walking, and working outdoors in all weather conditions across Birmingham.
• Reliability & Punctuality: Essential for early morning starts and ensuring the crew can begin its route on time. A consistent work ethic is non-negotiable.
• Safety-First Mindset: A genuine commitment to following health and safety protocols, wearing provided PPE at all times, and looking out for colleagues.
• Team Player Attitude: Ability to work cohesively as part of a small crew, communicating effectively and supporting team members throughout the shift.
• Right to Work: Must hold valid proof of right to work in the UK. A full driving licence is advantageous but not always essential for the operative role.
