Detailed Job Description & Requirements

Your day-to-day duties as a Healthcare Assistant will be varied and patient-focused. You will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, providing fundamental care that upholds the dignity and respect of every individual.

  • 1
Direct Patient Care: Assisting with personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, and feeding. Mobilising patients safely using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • 2
Clinical Support: Taking and recording routine observations (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation). Performing simple wound dressings and catheter care under supervision.
  • 3
Emotional & Social Support: Providing companionship, listening to patient concerns, and engaging them in therapeutic activities. This is especially crucial in mental health and elderly care settings.
  • 4
Documentation & Communication: Maintaining accurate, timely patient records on digital systems. Reporting any changes in a patient’s condition promptly to the nurse in charge.
  • 5
Environmental Duties: Ensuring patient areas are clean, tidy, and safe. Restocking clinical supplies and handling linen according to infection control policies.
  • 6
End-of-Life Care: Providing compassionate, dignified support to patients and their families during palliative care, respecting their wishes and beliefs.

Note: Specific responsibilities will vary depending on the placement setting (e.g., acute hospital ward vs. dementia care home). Full induction and task-specific training will be provided by the client.

Frequently Asked Questions

While experience is highly valued, it is not always an absolute barrier to entry. Many healthcare providers, especially those facing staffing shortages, are willing to invest in candidates with the right attitude, values, and interpersonal skills. Carer Agency can place suitable candidates into supervised induction roles where comprehensive training is provided. Any prior experience in a caring role, even informally, should be highlighted in your application.

For roles marked"Immediate Start," we aim for a swift turnaround. If you have an up-to-date DBS certificate on the update service and all your documentation (right-to-work, references) is readily available, you could potentially be placed within a matter of days. For those requiring new checks, the process typically takes 1-2 weeks, as DBS applications are dependent on external processing times. We expedite every stage to get you working as soon as possible.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there can be subtle differences. Typically, a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) works within a clinical setting like a hospital or clinic, often performing more clinical tasks (observations, basic wound care) under direct nursing supervision. A Care Assistant more commonly works in residential or domiciliary (home) care settings, focusing on personal care, daily living activities, and companionship. However, the core skills of compassion, dignity, and support are universal. Many of our roles blend these responsibilities.

Absolutely. Being a Healthcare Assistant is a recognised and respected stepping stone in the healthcare career ladder. With experience and further training, you could progress to a Senior Healthcare Assistant, a Nursing Associate (a role that bridges the gap between HCA and Registered Nurse), or use your experience as a foundation to apply for nurse, midwife, or paramedic training. Carer Agency actively supports this progression through partnerships with training providers and by highlighting temp-to-perm opportunities that can lead to permanent, promoted positions within client organisations.

Your CV should be clear and focused on relevant skills. Key sections to include are: Contact Details; Personal Profile (a brief summary of your care ethos); Key Skills (e.g., personal care, communication, infection control, record keeping); Work Experience (with bullet points detailing duties, not just job titles); Qualifications & Training (NVQs, care certificates, manual handling, first aid); and References. Emphasise any experience with specific conditions like dementia, or in settings like hospitals. Tailor it for each application if possible. If you are interested email your cv and info to [email protected].
