Frequently Asked Questions
While previous professional experience in a care setting is a significant advantage, we also value relevant personal experience (e.g., caring for a family member) and, most importantly, the right attitude. We provide comprehensive training to ensure you are confident and competent. For those completely new to care, we may recommend starting with certain client groups or offer shadow shifts.
We work with providers who require cover across all shifts. Common patterns include: Early shifts (7am-3pm), Late shifts (3pm-11pm), and Long day/night shifts (7am-11pm or 11pm-7am). Weekend work is often available at enhanced rates. We discuss your preferences during registration to match you with suitable placements. For insight into flexible working trends, you might find our resource on future workforce planning interesting.
For candidates with a portable DBS and all necessary documentation ready, the process can be very fast – sometimes within 48-72 hours. If you need a new DBS, this typically adds 1-2 weeks. We strive for efficiency, much like our process for filling urgent specialist roles. The key is responding promptly to our requests for information and completing your online registration forms quickly.
We provide all mandatory training free of charge, typically via our easy-to-use online portal. This includes Safeguarding, Moving & Handling, Infection Control, and more. For complex client needs, client-specific training is provided onsite. Your dedicated consultant is your main support, but we also have a 24/7 phone line for any urgent issues while on shift. Our support structure is a core part of our healthcare workforce solutions offering.

The Leeds LS9 Care Landscape: Where You'll Make an Impact
Leeds LS9 encompasses vibrant, diverse communities like Harehills, Seacroft, and Cross Gates. The care needs here are as varied as the community itself, offering a uniquely rewarding environment for Support Workers.
Working in LS9 isn't just a job; it's about becoming a part of the local fabric. You'll provide essential support within residential care homes for the elderly, assisted living facilities for adults with learning disabilities, and through community outreach programs. The settings range from modern, purpose-built care villages to supported living houses integrated into neighbourhoods, allowing residents to maintain their community ties.
The role often involves understanding and respecting a wide array of cultural backgrounds, traditions, and languages prevalent in East Leeds. This cultural competence is a skill we highly value and support through our ongoing training modules, which cover topics from effective communication strategies to understanding specific health beliefs within different communities.
A Day in the Life: Community Support in LS11
Imagine starting your day supporting David, a gentleman with early-stage dementia in Seacroft, helping him with his morning routine and attending a local memory café. Your afternoon might involve assisting Aisha, a young adult with physical disabilities in Harehills, with her personal care and accompanying her to a college art class. This variety is typical and ensures no two days are ever the same.
From Temp to Permanent: Real Career Journeys
Hear from Care Assistants who started with a temporary placement through Carer Agency and built a lasting career in Leeds.
Sarah-Jane
Now a Senior Care Assistant in LS10
“I came to Carer Agency with just six months of experience. They placed me in a fantastic temp role at a dementia care home in Cross Gates. The consistency of weekly pay gave me stability, and my consultant really listened to my career goals. After 8 months, the home offered me a permanent senior position. The agency even helped negotiate my salary. They didn't just find me a job; they helped build my career.”
Timeline: Registered → 1st placement in 5 days → Permanent offer after 8 months → Promoted to Senior after 14 months.
Michael K.
Former Retail Manager, now Full-Time Support Worker
“After 15 years in retail, I wanted a complete change to something meaningful. I was nervous about having no professional care experience. Carer Agency provided all the mandatory training and found me a supported living placement in LS9 working with adults with autism. They started me with shorter shadow shifts to build my confidence. Now, 18 months on, I’m in a full-time role I love. The career change support was invaluable.”
Key Support: Full training package + shadow shifts + dedicated consultant for career changers + access to specialist autism awareness courses.
Beyond Compliance: Our Investment in Your Development
While we cover all legally required training, our commitment extends to your professional growth. We offer subsidised access to recognised qualifications that can fast-track your career, such as:
- Level 2 & 3 Diplomas in Care
- Dementia Care Specialist Modules
- Medication Administration (Train the Trainer)
- Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
This focus on development ensures you're not just filling a shift, but building a resilient, future-proof career in a sector that values skilled professionals. We act as a bridge between temporary work and long-term qualification, a strategy we detail in resources for employers on strategic talent development.
Supporting Your Wellbeing: It's a Partnership
We recognise that care work, while incredibly rewarding, can be emotionally and physically demanding. At Carer Agency, your wellbeing is integral to our partnership. We have structured support systems in place because a supported carer provides the best care.
Debrief & Reflection Channels
Your dedicated consultant is not just for scheduling. They are a point of contact for reflective practice. After a challenging shift, you can schedule a call to debrief confidentially. We also facilitate access to online peer support groups for our registered carers, creating a community of practice where you can share experiences and solutions with colleagues across Leeds.
Practical & Financial Resilience
We mitigate one of the biggest stressors in agency work: inconsistent income. Our weekly pay guarantee means you always know when money is arriving. For longer-term temp assignments, we offer the option to move to a retained hours agreement, providing greater income predictability. Furthermore, our partnerships with local businesses in Leeds sometimes yield discounts on health products, gym memberships, and wellness services for our active carers.
Your Safety & Professional Boundaries
Working safely and within clear professional boundaries protects both you and the service user. Our pre-placement briefings always include:
- Client-Specific Risk Assessments: Detailed information on any known environmental, health, or behavioural risks before you accept a shift.
- Whistleblowing Policy & Support: A clear, confidential, and independent route to raise any concerns about practice or safeguarding, without fear of repercussion.
- Lone Working Protocols: For community-based roles, we ensure clients have robust check-in systems and you have 24/7 access to our on-call phone line for immediate support.
- Equipment & PPE: We verify that all client sites provide necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and moving & handling equipment, and we provide guidance on its correct use.
This holistic support framework is a cornerstone of our service, ensuring sustainable careers for the professionals we place. It reflects the same duty of care we advocate for in our workforce solutions for employers.
