Job Description

Carer Agency, a trusted healthcare staffing agency serving Bristol and the wider South West, is urgently seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Medical Interpreter for a vital temporary-to-potentially-permanent placement. This role is central to delivering exceptional patient care within a busy NHS Trust and private healthcare settings in the Bristol region, including the BS10 postcode area. The position demands a professional who can bridge communication gaps with precision, empathy, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that non-English speaking patients receive the same high standard of care and understanding as everyone else. In a city as diverse as Bristol, the need for clear, accurate medical communication is paramount, and this role puts you at the heart of that mission.

As a specialist in healthcare workforce solutions, Carer Agency connects talented professionals like you with the institutions that need them most. By applying for this Medical Interpreter role through our agency, you gain access to a streamlined registration process, weekly pay, and the support of a dedicated consultant who understands the local healthcare landscape. Whether you are looking for an immediate start to fill a gap in your schedule or seeking a longer-term career opportunity in the medical field, this position offers a flexible and rewarding pathway. We manage a wide portfolio of roles, from Healthcare Staffing in London to niche positions like an AI Chatbot Architect in CT4, ensuring we can match your skills with the perfect opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, impartial, and confidential verbal interpretation between healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, consultants) and patients/families in real-time during consultations, procedures, and ward rounds.
  • Translate written medical documents, including patient information leaflets, consent forms, discharge summaries, and prescription instructions, ensuring technical terminology is conveyed correctly and understandably.
  • Explain medical concepts, diagnoses, treatment plans, and procedures in a culturally appropriate manner, acting as a cultural liaison to facilitate mutual understanding and trust.
  • Adhere strictly to all professional codes of conduct, confidentiality agreements (including NHS data protection standards), and ethical guidelines governing medical interpretation.
  • Maintain detailed records of assignments and provide brief handovers to clinical teams or other interpreters as required, supporting continuity of care.

What We're Looking For

  • Fluency in English and at least one other language (specific language requirements will be confirmed upon application, with high demand for common Bristol community languages).
  • Proven experience as a Medical Interpreter in a UK healthcare setting (NHS, private hospital, or clinic). Formal certification (e.g., DPSI in Health, NRPSI registration) is a significant advantage.
  • In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and the UK healthcare system. The ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic in sensitive or high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to accuracy and impartiality. Must have the right to work in the UK and be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Salary & Benefits

We offer a highly competitive pay rate for this Medical Interpreter in Bristol, which will be discussed upon application and is commensurate with your experience, qualifications, and the specific demands of the assignment. Pay is processed weekly, providing you with regular and reliable income. In addition to financial remuneration, working with Carer Agency comes with a suite of benefits designed to support your career and well-being:

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to be a Medical Interpreter in Bristol?

While fluency in English and another language is essential, most NHS and private healthcare providers in Bristol strongly prefer or require formal certification. The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) in Health or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) is highly valued. Relevant experience in a medical setting is often considered equally important.

How quickly can I start after applying?

For this specific"ASAP start" role, the process is expedited. If your CV matches the requirements and you have all necessary documentation (right to work, DBS, references) ready, you could be placed within a matter of days. We specialise in fast-track placements, much like our process for Temporary Construction Workers in Norwich.

Is this role only in hospitals?

No. While the primary placement may be in a major hospital like Southmead (BS10) or the BRI, Medical Interpreters in Bristol are needed across the healthcare ecosystem. This includes GP surgeries, community health centres, mental health trusts, dental clinics, and physiotherapy departments. We match you with assignments that suit your preferences and expertise.

What is the pay rate for a Medical Interpreter?

Pay is competitive and varies based on language pair, demand, certification, experience, and the specific assignment (e.g., out-of-hours work may pay more). We discuss the exact rate for each role transparently during the registration process. We ensure our rates are in line with the Bristol market to attract and retain the best talent.

Does Carer Agency offer other types of work in Bristol?
