Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

• Site Preparation and Clearance: Responsible for the initial setting out of the site, including stripping topsoil, clearing debris, and levelling ground to precise engineering specifications. This involves interpreting site plans and using laser levels and other measuring equipment.
• Drainage and Service Duct Installation: Installing below-ground drainage systems, including laying pipes, constructing inspection chambers (manholes), and backfilling trenches. You will also assist in the installation of service ducts for utilities like electricity, water, and telecommunications.
• Concrete Work: Preparing sub-bases, erecting and striking formwork, pouring and finishing concrete for foundations, floor slabs, paths, and kerbs. This includes knowledge of concrete mixes, curing times, and finishing techniques.
• Hard Landscaping and Pavement Construction: Laying paving slabs, block paving, and kerbstones to create pathways, driveways, and public realm areas. This requires a keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality finish.
• Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Adhering strictly to all site safety rules, including wearing correct PPE, participating in daily briefings (toolbox talks), and ensuring your work area is tidy and hazard-free. You will be expected to contribute to a positive safety culture on site.
• Assisting Other Trades: Working collaboratively with Roofer teams by ensuring safe access and preparation, or supporting Carpenters during formwork stages. The role is often a precursor to other skilled trades moving onto site.
• Machine Operation Support: Assisting plant operators by directing machinery, slinging loads, and preparing areas for excavators or dumpers, always maintaining clear communication and situational awareness.

Essential Skills & Requirements

• Proven Experience: Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a Groundworker on UK construction sites, with references available upon request.
• Relevant Qualifications: A valid CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is mandatory. Additional cards such as CPCS or NPORS for plant operation are highly advantageous.
• Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of construction drawings, setting out techniques, and the use of hand tools and power tools specific to groundwork.
• Physical Fitness & Reliability: The role is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, manual digging, and working in all weather conditions. Punctuality and a strong work ethic are non-negotiable.
• Team Player Attitude: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, take instruction from site supervisors and foremen, and communicate clearly with colleagues and other trades.
• Safety-First Mindset: A thorough understanding and demonstrable commitment to health and safety practices, including SSSTS or similar training (preferred but not essential for this level).
